Once you’ve decided ABA therapy is right for your child, the next question comes fast: where should it happen? Some families picture a therapist coming to the house. Others prefer a clinic with structured rooms and other kids around. Both can work well. The best choice depends on your child’s goals, your family’s schedule, and where your child learns best.
With our new in-center clinic opening in Fair Lawn this month, AG Behavioral Services families now have both options. Here’s how to think through the choice.
What in-home ABA looks like
With in-home ABA, a Behavior Technician comes to your home on a regular schedule, under the supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). Sessions happen where your child spends most of their day.
Benefits of in-home therapy:
Skills are learned where they’re used. Getting dressed, brushing teeth, eating meals, and playing with siblings are practiced in the real setting.
Problem behaviors are addressed where they happen. If bedtime or mealtime is the hardest part of the day, the therapist can see it and help directly.
Parents are part of every session. You see the strategies firsthand, which makes it easier to use them between sessions.
No commute. For busy families, or children who struggle with car rides and transitions, staying home can make therapy more consistent.
Things to consider: Home has distractions, like siblings, pets, TVs, and favorite toys. It also offers fewer chances to practice with other kids.

What in-center ABA looks like
With in-center ABA, your child comes to a clinic designed for therapy. Sessions take place in a structured setting with a BCBA on-site and other children nearby.
Benefits of in-center therapy:
Fewer distractions. A space built for learning can help children focus, especially early
in therapy.
More social opportunities. Being around peers creates natural chances to practice sharing, turn-taking, and play.
School readiness. Following a schedule, sitting in a group, and transitioning between activities look a lot like a classroom.
Close clinical oversight. BCBAs on-site can observe sessions often and adjust programs quickly.
A routine outside the home. For some families, it also gives parents dedicated time during the day.
Things to consider: Center-based therapy requires transportation. Skills learned at the clinic also need to be practiced at home so they carry over, which is where parent training comes in.
Questions to help you decide
1. What are your child’s top goals right now? If they’re about routines at home, like sleep, meals, or self-care, in-home may be a strong fit. If they’re about social skills or getting ready for school, a center may help more.
2. Where does your child focus best? Some kids thrive in a familiar space. Others focus better away from their toys and screens.
3. What does your schedule allow? Think about work hours, school pickup, and other therapies.
4. How does your child handle transitions? If leaving the house is very hard right now, starting at home can build skills before moving to a center.
5. Do you want both? Many children benefit from a mix, such as in-center sessions for social skills plus in-home sessions or parent training for routines.
You don’t have to choose forever
Your child’s needs will change, and their therapy setting can change too. Your BCBA will review progress regularly and can recommend shifting settings or combining them as goals evolve. A child might start at home, move to the center to build social and school skills, then keep a few in-home sessions for family routines.
Insurance coverage can vary by setting, so it’s worth checking your benefits early. Our team can help you understand what your plan covers.
